Vermont Gas Systems, Champlain Housing Trust, and Evernorth are initiating the Riggs Meadow development in Hinesburg, comprising 44 units of affordable housing. This project will implement ground-source heat pumps, marking it as Vermont's first neighborhood-scale geothermal heating initiative.
The estimated upfront investment for geothermal infrastructure is approximately $275,000, which is expected to stabilize energy costs for residents. The development, costing around $20 million, is partly funded by federal and state grants.
Construction is projected to start in 2026, with occupancy anticipated in 2027. This initiative could serve as a model for future housing projects, addressing both the housing crisis and the need for renewable energy solutions in Vermont.
