Vestas Highlights Need for 400% Employment Growth in South African Wind Sector by 2042
The South African wind energy sector must increase employment by 300-400% by 2042 to match projected growth, according to Vestas. With current jobs at 3,750, this figure needs to exceed 20,000 to meet anticipated demand.

Johannes Helberg, MD of Vestas Southern and Eastern Africa, stated that South Africa's wind energy capacity is projected to grow from 7.5 GW to 43 GW by 2042. The industry currently employs 3,750 individuals, which must rise to over 20,000 to support this expansion.
Policy certainty is crucial for job growth and the stability of manufacturing facilities, which are under strain due to inconsistent renewables procurement. A predictable project pipeline is necessary for attracting investment, and expanding the power grid capacity is essential for project execution. Localisation should encompass skills development and technician training, not just manufacturing.
