Vietnam and Malaysia Strengthen Parliamentary Ties and ASEAN Cooperation

During his official visit to Malaysia, Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man engaged in discussions with Malaysian Senate President Dato Awang Beme Awang Ali Basah on September 19, 2025. This meeting, part of the 46th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, marked a significant step in fortifying bilateral relations and underscoring Vietnam's commitment to a cohesive ASEAN framework.

Welcomed warmly by his Malaysian counterpart, Chairman Man expressed gratitude for the hospitality extended to the Vietnamese delegation, which coincided with Malaysia's National Day celebrations. Their dialogue emphasized not only the longstanding diplomatic relations but also the importance of enhancing cooperation in several domains, particularly in the legislative arena.

Both leaders acknowledged the impressive strides Malaysia has made as one of the world's top 27 competitive economies, affirming Vietnam's desire to deepen its strategic partnership with Malaysia. They discussed various initiatives aimed at fostering political trust and facilitating economic exchanges, including the promotion of Malaysian investments in Vietnam and the development of the halal industry.

Moreover, the two sides committed to advancing inter-parliamentary cooperation by encouraging exchanges among lawmakers and enhancing legal frameworks that support bilateral initiatives. They agreed to prioritize the implementation of various bilateral agreements, ensuring that both nations benefit from their cooperation.

The discussions also touched on pressing regional issues, particularly the South China Sea, with both sides reaffirming their dedication to a united and self-reliant ASEAN. Chairman Man called for humanitarian treatment of Vietnamese fishermen in Malaysia, reflecting a commitment to the welfare of the Vietnamese community abroad.

In a related effort, Chairman Man met with leaders from Petronas, Malaysia’s state-owned oil and gas company, to advocate for expanded collaboration in renewable energy and other sectors. This visit not only marked a pivotal moment in Vietnam-Malaysia relations but also demonstrated the broader aspirations for a stable and inclusive ASEAN community amid evolving geopolitical landscapes.
