Vietnam's revised Power Development Plan VIII (PDP8) significantly raises the Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) target from 300 MW to between 10,000 MW and 16,300 MW by 2030. This revision reflects Vietnam's strategy to enhance renewable energy integration.

Forecasts for renewable energy include onshore and nearshore wind capacity of 26,066 MW to 38,029 MW by 2030 and offshore wind capacity of 17,032 MW by 2035. Solar power capacity targets have also been increased to between 46,459 MW and 73,416 MW.

BESS will play a crucial role in stabilizing the grid and managing peak demand. The government initiated BESS implementation in 2019, but most systems remain small (<100 kW) and after-the-meter. Key decisions, including Decision No. 1009/QD-TTg, emphasize improving the power system and promoting energy storage technologies, with mechanisms proposed for incentivizing BESS development alongside renewable projects.
