Vietnam's $3 Billion Nature-Based Solution for Mekong Delta Water Security
Vietnam proposes the Nature-Based Mekong Delta Water Replenishment System (MD-GWRS) to restore water security, targeting 1.5 million m³/day groundwater yield. This initiative could yield $450 million annually in economic benefits through enhanced agriculture and aquaculture, contingent on substantial investment and governance.

The proposed MD-GWRS aims to increase groundwater yield in the Mekong Delta from 1.5 million to 4 million cubic meters per day at an estimated annual cost of $317 million. This nature-based approach is expected to deliver economic benefits of $225-$480 million annually through improved agricultural yields and aquaculture production, while addressing challenges like salinity intrusion and groundwater depletion.
The system involves five plants and requires approximately 50 megawatts of wind power capacity, with a total investment of around $3 billion. Effective governance and new regulations will be essential for operational success, and financing strategies will include ODA, FDI, and PPPs. Implementing the MD-GWRS is critical to safeguarding the Mekong Delta's ecological stability and economic viability as it faces increasing climate threats.
