Vietnam's National Assembly Chairman Advocates for Enhanced Energy Cooperation with Malaysia's Petronas

In a significant diplomatic engagement, Vietnam's National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man convened with leaders of Petronas, Malaysia's national oil and gas company, on September 17. This meeting was part of his official visit to Malaysia, coinciding with the 46th AIPA General Assembly. Chairman Man emphasized the robust comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Malaysia, highlighting the critical role of oil and gas cooperation as a foundational pillar of their bilateral relations.

With a history of successful collaboration, Petronas and Petrovietnam have engaged in various joint ventures, now branching into promising areas such as liquefied natural gas and renewable energy. Recognizing Petronas's contributions to Vietnam's energy security, Chairman Man expressed hope for continued cooperation tailored to meet the unique needs and capabilities of both nations. He specifically called for a focus on ensuring stable, long-term gas supplies and advancing initiatives in green energy, including hydrogen production and carbon capture and storage, aligning with their commitments to achieve net-zero emissions.

To bolster future endeavors, the Chairman urged Petronas to work closely with Petrovietnam in implementing agreed projects efficiently while adhering to the legal frameworks of both countries. He requested detailed evaluations of upcoming energy projects slated for commercial operation in 2025, emphasizing the importance of training, technological transfer, and human resource development to maximize the economic and social benefits of each joint venture.

In response, Petronas leaders expressed their pride in the longstanding partnership with Petrovietnam and the Vietnamese government. They reaffirmed their dedication to expanding their footprint in Vietnam and noted that progress in renewable energy cooperation is on track. The leaders conveyed optimism about realizing the shared vision of both nations in this field and reiterated their commitment to collaborate on carbon capture initiatives.

During the visit, Petronas also introduced the iconic Petronas Twin Towers to the Vietnamese delegation, showcasing Malaysia's architectural prowess.
