Vinssen Develops Fuel Cell System for Class-Approved Ammonia-Fuelled Tanker Concept
AMMONIAFUEL CELLHYDROGEN
Vinssen has developed a fuel cell system design for an ammonia-fuelled tanker concept that has received class approval at the design stage from Bureau Veritas. The design employs six 2 MW fuel cell modules to provide power for propulsion, cargo operations, and onboard systems for a 115,000 DWT LR2 tanker.
The concept utilizes ammonia as a hydrogen carrier, with onboard hydrogen production via an ammonia cracking system from Panasia. This project, in collaboration with MISC Berhad and Samsung Heavy Industries, aims to explore the application of fuel cell technology in large tankers and establish safety and regulatory standards for ammonia-based fuel cell systems.
