Viraj Aero Proposes Steam Injection for Enhanced Gas Turbine Efficiency in Aviation
Viraj Aero aims to implement steam injection technology in gas turbines to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions in aviation. The Eyja engine could achieve up to 30% fuel savings and address significant non-CO₂ climate impacts.

Viraj Aero is introducing steam injection technology into aviation gas turbines through its Eyja engine, targeting a 30% reduction in fuel consumption compared to existing turboprop engines. This technology, adapted from industrial power plants, leverages water vapor from combustion gases, creating a closed-loop system that eliminates the need for heavy water tanks on aircraft.
The startup's presence in Toulouse-Blagnac enhances collaboration with major aerospace stakeholders, accelerating development timelines. Notably, steam injection also addresses non-CO₂ emissions, which constitute approximately two-thirds of aviation's climate impact, thus providing a comprehensive solution for decarbonization. The integration of hydrogen fuels further amplifies efficiency gains, establishing a synergistic relationship between the two technologies.
