Virginia Data Center Proposals Risk Overburdening Resources and Regulations
Virginia's data center projects could require up to 70 gigawatts of electricity, significantly exceeding current capacity. This surge raises concerns over regulatory compliance and environmental impact.

Proposals for data centers in Virginia could lead to a demand for 70 gigawatts of electricity, nearly tripling the peak load of Dominion Energy. Approximately 370 million square feet of existing and proposed facilities have been mapped by the Piedmont Environmental Council.
Local governments possess regulatory tools to manage noise and pollution; however, there is a risk that financial incentives may compromise regulatory adherence. Legal challenges are emerging against developments near historic areas, underscoring the importance of community engagement. Brazil is also experiencing a rise in data center energy needs, with expectations of 25 gigawatts by 2035, reflecting broader infrastructure demands.
