Strasbourg-based Viridian Lithium has been placed in judicial liquidation after failing to secure funding for a lithium refinery in northern Alsace. The decision was made by the Strasbourg commercial court and is expected to be officially published soon. The project aimed to create a €295 million plant capable of producing batteries for up to one million electric vehicles annually, but market conditions have significantly deteriorated since its inception in 2021.

The Strasbourg startup Viridian Lithium has entered judicial liquidation due to an inability to secure financing for its planned lithium refinery in Lauterbourg, Alsace. The decision by the Strasbourg commercial court will be published shortly.
The project, which was expected to require an investment of €295 million and create approximately 250 jobs, aimed to produce batteries for 500,000 to one million electric vehicles annually. A 14-hectare site was reserved since 2024, and land preparation commenced last summer for a projected operational start in 2028. However, changing market conditions have hindered competitiveness against Chinese projects, according to company representatives.
