Visayas Grid Faces Ongoing Power Reserve Shortages in July
The Visayas grid's power reserves remain critically low, raising concerns over potential rotational brownouts. Current supply levels are insufficient to meet the required reserve margins, indicating persistent strain on the grid's stability.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) reports the Visayas grid supply between 2,524 MW and 2,661 MW, while peak demand is projected between 2,310 MW and 2,475 MW. Reserve margins are forecasted at only 186 MW to 220 MW, falling significantly below the required 401 to 405 MW.
This week, the grid is expected to consistently underperform, particularly on July 3, when the margin may drop to 186 MW against peak demand. Local generation capacity is approximately 1,957 to 1,968 MW, heavily relying on coal, thermal, and geothermal sources. Imports from Luzon and Mindanao provide some relief but remain inadequate for stable operations, putting utilities on alert for potential Interruptible Load Programs or brownouts.
