Voka Warns of Billions in Economic Losses Due to Belgian Grid Congestion Amid Rapid Electrification

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTUREFLOW CONTROLPOWER GRIDS & TRANSMISSION

The Flemish employers' organization Voka has warned that electricity grid congestion in Belgium could result in billions of euros in economic losses without urgent action. The increasing use of heat pumps, electric vehicles, battery parks, and data centers is straining the power grid, leading to significant delays in securing connections.

Applications for conventional grid connections surged from 35 in March 2025 to 650 in March 2026. Voka emphasizes the need for policymakers and grid operators Elia and Fluvius to prioritize industrial projects and expedite infrastructure improvements to prevent delays in sustainable technology deployment.
