Vulkangruppe, a left-wing activist group, claimed responsibility for the sabotage of a power plant in south-west Berlin on Saturday, leading to power cuts until Wednesday. In a statement posted on Indymedia, the group described the attack as an act of self-defense linked to concerns over energy consumption by data centers, which they argue are driving an unsustainable demand for resources.
Despite the incident, major German data center operators, including NorthC, reported no interruptions to their operations. In 2025, Germany experienced significant growth in large-scale data center projects, with the Schwarz Group beginning construction on a 200MW facility in Lübbenau and discussions ongoing regarding the European Union's €20 billion AI gigafactories fund involving Deutsche Telekom and Schwarz Group. Hyperscalers like Google, Microsoft, and AWS have also committed to investments in the region.
