Wake County's One Water Plan for Sustainable Water Access Set for February Approval
The Wake County One Water Plan, a 50-year strategy to ensure clean water access for residents, is nearing completion and will be presented to the county's board of commissioners for approval in February. Developed over three years, the plan aims to protect water supply, reduce pollution, mitigate flooding, and ensure equitable access amid projected population growth of 250,000 in the next decade and over 2 million by 2070.
Key focuses include water supply, wastewater treatment, stormwater management, and groundwater protection. The plan also addresses data center water needs and proposes increasing educational outreach and workforce development.
Public comments were collected until October 10, following extensive community engagement. Additionally, Fuquay-Varina is pursuing a plan to source water from the Cape Fear River Basin, anticipating a water supply shortfall by 2030 due to rapid growth.
