Wales Launches Renewable Energy Sector Deal to Boost Local Capacity and Economic Growth
The Renewable Energy Sector Deal, launched by the Welsh Government, aims to enhance Wales' renewable energy capacity and economic benefits. It targets 70% renewable electricity generation by 2030 and 100% by 2035, alongside developing at least 1.5 GW of locally owned capacity. The deal focuses on accelerating deployment across various renewable sectors and strengthening supply chains. The Morlais tidal energy project, backed by an £8 million investment from the Welsh Government, exemplifies the initiative's goals.

The Welsh Government has initiated the Renewable Energy Sector Deal to unlock the full economic potential of renewable energy in Wales. The deal aims for renewable electricity generation to reach 70% of consumption by 2030 and 100% by 2035, with a minimum of 1.5 GW of locally owned capacity.
It focuses on accelerating onshore and offshore wind, solar, marine, and hydro deployment while enhancing supply chains and job creation. The Morlais tidal energy project in Anglesey, with an £8 million Welsh Government stake, will be Europe’s largest consented tidal project. The deal is expected to create 8,000 jobs and unlock £10 billion for Welsh businesses.
