Wales West Utilities to Upgrade Gas Infrastructure in Braunton

HYDROGEN

Wales West Utilities is poised to commence significant upgrades to the gas infrastructure in Braunton, specifically targeting the Heanton Street area. Scheduled to begin on September 29, this project is anticipated to last until the end of November, contingent upon any unforeseen engineering challenges. The upgrade is crucial for maintaining a reliable gas supply to both residents and businesses, ensuring warmth and comfort for generations to come.

In collaboration with Devon County Council, Wales West Utilities has implemented a comprehensive traffic management plan to mitigate disruptions. Heanton Street will be closed from October 13 to November 28, while four-way traffic lights will be operational at strategic junctions on East Street, Chaloner's Road, Caen Street, and The Square from November 3 to 28.

Roxanne Whittaker, the project manager overseeing the upgrades, acknowledged the challenges of working in such a vital area but stressed the necessity of the project. "It is essential to ensure that we maintain the gas flow to homes and businesses and to prepare the gas network for future demands," she stated. The underground gas infrastructure, while often invisible, plays a pivotal role in the daily lives of Braunton's residents, powering everything from heating systems to cooking appliances.

The upgrades not only aim to secure present-day gas supply but also position the network to accommodate the future integration of hydrogen and biomethane, aligning with broader environmental goals. Wales West Utilities serves approximately 7.5 million people across the South West of England and Wales, offering a crucial emergency service. Residents are reminded to report any gas smells or suspected carbon monoxide presence by calling 0800 111 999, ensuring prompt assistance around the clock.
