WALHI Urges JBIC to Withdraw Funding for Aceh Green Ammonia Initiative Over Safety and Transparency Issues
Wahana Lingkungan Hidup Indonesia (WALHI) has urged the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to withdraw funding for the Aceh Green Ammonia Initiative, citing safety and transparency concerns. WALHI criticized the project's classification as having minimal environmental impact, highlighting past ammonia leak incidents and questioning the project's reliance on fossil fuels for hydrogen production. The group has submitted a petition for the project's termination, arguing it undermines community rights and exacerbates fossil fuel dependence.

Wahana Lingkungan Hidup Indonesia (WALHI) has requested the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to cease funding for the Green Ammonia Initiative from Aceh (GAIA), citing concerns about safety, transparency, and community consultation. WALHI criticized JBIC's classification of GAIA as Category C under its environmental guidelines, which suggests minimal impact, arguing that this does not reflect the risks associated with existing ammonia facilities in North Aceh.
Between 2010 and 2025, there were nine ammonia leak incidents affecting around 2,000 residents. WALHI raised issues regarding ineffective emergency systems, poor communication, and economic harm to local fishermen.
The group also questioned the project's environmental credentials, stating that hydrogen production would rely on fossil fuel-based electricity. WALHI has submitted a petition demanding the project’s termination, alleging it exacerbates fossil fuel dependence and undermines community rights to information and participation.
