Walloon Recycling Centers Alarmed by Lithium Battery Fires Following CometSambre Incident
The presence of lithium batteries in waste streams poses significant fire risks to recycling facilities in Wallonia. Industry organizations Copidec and Denuo are calling for immediate action from authorities to prevent further incidents.

Following the CometSambre fire in Obourg, organizations Copidec and Denuo highlighted the increasing incidents of fires related to lithium batteries and other hazardous waste. They report that such events have become a structural issue within the recycling sector, impacting worker safety and operational integrity.
The fire at CometSambre was linked to a lithium battery, underscoring the risks posed by improperly disposed batteries found in household waste. Each fire can cause substantial damage, disrupt recycling operations, and require extensive firefighting resources. The groups urge policymakers and stakeholders in the production and consumption chain to implement preventive measures to safeguard against these dangers.
