Water Crisis on Cat Island Due to Broken Tanker Trucks
Residents of Cat Island are experiencing severe water shortages after two Water and Sewerage Corporation tanker trucks broke down. Deliveries have been disrupted for days or weeks, forcing reliance on rainwater. Repairs are in progress, but residents face ongoing challenges related to outdated water infrastructure. A private truck is temporarily assisting with deliveries, with plans for a modern potable water system under development.

Cat Island residents face significant water shortages due to the breakdown of two Water and Sewerage Corporation tanker trucks. Deliveries have ceased for days to weeks, with some residents relying solely on rainwater.
Reverend Clifton Hepburn noted that while rainwater tanks exist, reliance on truck deliveries remains critical during dry spells. Currently, one truck has been down for over six months, and another for more than three weeks.
WSC is arranging for a private operator to assist, delivering water at reduced rates. This crisis underscores ongoing issues with Cat Island’s water infrastructure, despite years of efforts to install a modern potable water system. Recent projects include the installation of 11 miles of water mains and a $7 million agreement for two desalination plants.
