Watts Bar Nuclear Plant Celebrates 30 Years of Unit 1 Operations
Watts Bar Nuclear Plant marked the 30th anniversary of Unit 1's commercial operations, adding 1,150 MW to the grid. This milestone reflects decades of dedicated service and adaptation following industry challenges, including safety enhancements post-Three Mile Island.

Watts Bar Nuclear Plant recently commemorated the 30th anniversary of Unit 1, which began commercial operations on May 27, 1996, contributing 1,150 megawatts to the regional power grid. The plant's construction, which began in July 1973, faced significant delays due to safety upgrades after the Three Mile Island accident in 1979 and shifts in regional electricity demand.
A group of long-serving employees, collectively contributing 241 years to TVA, reflected on their experiences and the pride associated with their work. With four of the six employees already retired, the camaraderie and commitment to the plant remain strong, illustrating the deep personal and professional ties formed over decades.
