WBPDCL Enhances Operational Performance and Expands into Renewables
WBPDCL, with an installed capacity of 4,265 MW, is increasing its operational efficiency while diversifying into renewables. The company achieved 100% coal self-sufficiency and a PLF of 88.9% in 2024-25, positioning itself as a key player in India's energy sector amidst rising electricity demand.

West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited (WBPDCL) operates 4,265 MW of installed capacity, primarily from five thermal power plants. In 2024-25, the corporation achieved a plant load factor (PLF) of 88.9%, significantly above the national average, while recording its highest electricity generation at 33.2 billion units.
The completion of a 660 MW supercritical unit at Sagardighi is set for early 2026, marking a significant technological advancement. WBPDCL also operates five captive coal mines, achieving 100% self-sufficiency in coal supply in 2024-25.
The transition to renewable energy includes a planned 200 MW floating solar plant. Challenges include the need for flexible operations and financial constraints from distribution companies. The company aims to maintain leadership by enhancing operational efficiency and expanding its renewable portfolio.
