Welsh Affairs Committee to Address Metal Mine Pollution in Wales
The Welsh Affairs Committee will conduct an evidence session on July 1 regarding the impact of abandoned metal mines in Wales. The inquiry focuses on the environmental and economic effects, with over 1,300 sites contributing to pollution in water systems across the region.

On July 1, the Welsh Affairs Committee will hold an evidence session concerning pollution from abandoned metal mines, as part of its inquiry into the impact of old industries in Wales. Approximately 1,300 abandoned sites are reported to negatively affect water quality and ecosystems across more than 700 kilometers of rivers and lakes.
Historical mining activities, particularly in areas like Halkyn and Cilcain, have led to the presence of harmful metals such as cadmium, lead, zinc, and copper in local watercourses. The committee, led by Ruth Jones MP, will evaluate the scale of the pollution and progress made since the last hearing two years ago. This session highlights ongoing environmental challenges and potential risks to aquatic life and human health.
