Wesizwe Platinum's Bakubung Mine Enters Restructuring Talks, Temporarily Shuts Down
Wesizwe Platinum has initiated Section 189 consultations at Bakubung Platinum Mine, affecting 497 employees. The mine will undergo a three-week shutdown as it transitions to a revised operational strategy, potentially leading to a 70% workforce reduction.

Wesizwe Platinum's Bakubung Platinum Mine will temporarily cease operations for three weeks due to restructuring discussions impacting 497 employees. The company has abandoned its existing 1 Mtpa production strategy, opting for a new plan that includes a single-stage ramp-up to 3.5 Mtpa, necessitating a workforce reduction.
The formal consultation process will be conducted with the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), despite limited alternatives to workforce cuts. The current employee count of 706 is deemed unsustainable in light of the operational challenges faced by the company. This development may heighten tensions with labor, following previous unrest over job security and wage demands.
