West Ashley Sewer Tunnel Project Nears Completion in Charleston, SC
The West Ashley Sewer Tunnel Extension project is nearing completion, addressing sewage overflow issues in Charleston. With a capacity of 60 million gallons per day, the tunnel will enhance sewage management for several local areas.

The West Ashley Sewer Tunnel Extension project is nearly finished, with the tunnel boring machine, Miss Harper, completing its 20,000-foot excavation. This project, executed under a $135 million budget, aims to mitigate sewage overflows during heavy rain by increasing capacity to 60 million gallons per day.
The tunnel will transport sewage from West Ashley, Johns Island, Hollywood, Ravenel, and Meggett to the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant. Although boring is complete, full operation remains about 18 months away as infrastructure connections and sealing processes are finalized. This project is crucial for environmental protection and reliable sewage service management.
