West Bengal Government Announces New Airports to Enhance Regional Connectivity
West Bengal plans a second airport near Kolkata in Kalyani, alongside new airports in Purulia, Balurghat, and Malda. This initiative aims to relieve congestion at Dum Dum airport and stimulate regional economic growth.

The West Bengal government has earmarked Rs 10 crore for aviation infrastructure in the 2026-27 budget, facilitating the establishment of a second airport in Kalyani, requiring 1,000 to 1,500 acres of land. This greenfield airport aims to alleviate pressure from the existing Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, which recorded over 55,000 passengers on June 21, 2026.
New airports in Purulia, Balurghat, and Malda are also proposed under the UDAN scheme to enhance regional connectivity. Additionally, the government will allocate 25 acres to Hasimara Air Force Station and 37 acres to Kalaikunda Air Force Station for expansion. The infrastructure developments reflect a strategic approach to improve air travel accessibility and support economic activities across the state.
