West Burton C Battery Project Secures £250M Financing for UK Energy Storage Expansion
The West Burton C battery energy storage project has achieved financial closure with £250 million in backing, including £231 million in loans. Construction is slated to begin in 2026, with operations expected to commence by 2028, contributing significantly to the UK's energy storage capacity.

The West Burton C project, part of Fidra Energy's UK storage pipeline exceeding four gigawatts, has secured £250 million in financing. This includes £231 million from international lenders, with additional support from the National Wealth Fund and EIG.
Located on a former coal power site, construction is set for 2026, aiming for operational status by 2028. Fidra has also established a long-term agreement with Drax Group for 50% of the capacity and received a 15-year UK Government capacity market award starting October 2028.
Sungrow will supply batteries, while H&MV Engineering will handle design and contracting. The project is aligned with the UK Government's goal of achieving 22-27GW of battery storage by 2030, reflecting the increasing institutional investment in the sector.
