West Suffolk Council Recommends Approval for Controversial Chicken Farm Plans Despite Over 1,000 Objections
West Suffolk Council has recommended approval for a controversial chicken farm at Cross Green Farm in Thelnetham, despite over 1,000 objections from local residents and parish councils. The project, proposed by Gareth Hart, aims to replace outdated pig housing with four poultry breeder sheds, housing up to 39,999 birds and creating two full-time jobs. Concerns regarding environmental impact, road traffic, and pollution were raised, but planning officers concluded that proposed conditions would sufficiently address these issues.

Plans for a new chicken farm at Cross Green Farm in Thelnetham, proposed by Gareth Hart, have been recommended for approval by West Suffolk Council despite receiving over 1,000 objections. The project includes the construction of four poultry breeder sheds to replace 250 outdated pig housing units.
The new farm would house up to 39,999 poultry and create two full-time jobs. Concerns raised by local parish councils and residents include environmental impact, road traffic, and pollution. Thelnetham Parish Council expressed that the project would not benefit the village and feared it would harm the local environment. Planning officers noted that the proposal was close to the threshold for requiring an environmental permit, but conditions addressing noise, odour, and ammonia levels were deemed sufficient to mitigate concerns.
