Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku conducted an oversight visit to the Port of Saldanha, emphasizing its critical role in freight mobility and economic growth. The port, Africa's largest natural deep-water port, supports mineral exports and maritime services.
The visit included provincial officials, Transnet representatives, and stakeholders to review operations and infrastructure progress, focusing on integrating Saldanha into national freight reforms. In 2025, the National Department of Transport initiated a Request for Information (RFI) to facilitate private sector involvement in key rail and port corridors, including the Northern Cape-Saldanha Bulk Minerals Corridor, which received 51 submissions for iron ore and manganese transport.
The port is also piloting cruise ship berthing, having accommodated three liners in the 2024/25 season. The oversight aimed to strengthen logistics and investment opportunities in the region.
