Western North Carolina to Deploy 24 Microgrids for Emergency Power
Western North Carolina will implement 24 microgrids funded by a $5 million investment to provide emergency power during outages caused by hurricanes. This initiative aims to ensure access to critical resources such as medical devices and food supplies in affected areas.

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality is funding the construction of 24 microgrids across six counties in western North Carolina, with a total investment of $5 million. Expected completion is slated for next year.
These microgrids, equipped with solar panels, will be utilized during emergencies to deliver power where traditional grid access is compromised. Additionally, two mobile microgrids will be developed, one designated for western North Carolina and the other for coastal deployment.
This strategy aims to quickly restore power access, particularly for vulnerable populations reliant on essential services. The initiative supports local food access during disasters through partnerships with organizations like MANNA FoodBank.
