Westport and Cummins Initiate $10M Natural Gas Truck Project
Westport Innovations and Cummins Engine Co. have launched a $10 million project to convert heavy-duty trucks to natural gas. The initiative aims to develop an environmentally friendly alternative to diesel fuel, with an emphasis on lower emissions and maintaining performance standards.

Westport Innovations Inc. and Cummins Engine Co. have initiated a two-year, $10 million project focused on adapting heavy-duty trucks to use liquefied natural gas. Cummins will supply its ISX engine, which was part of a $1.5 billion product launch, while Westport will modify the engine using its High Pressure Direct Injection technology.
The project includes the installation of a natural gas fuel tank and compressor in three trucks, with one prototype remaining in Vancouver for demonstrations. A Memorandum of Understanding governs the collaboration, and if successful, a business plan for commercialization will be developed. The project aims to demonstrate reduced emissions while maintaining the performance of traditional diesel engines.
