Westwater Resources Files Water Quality Permit for Coosa Graphite Project in Alabama
Westwater Resources has submitted a federal water quality permit application for its Coosa Graphite Project in Alabama, the largest natural flake graphite deposit in the contiguous U.S. This filing is part of a lengthy permitting process, crucial in light of China's dominance over 95% of the global battery-grade graphite supply and high U.S. tariffs on imports. The project aims to establish a domestic supply chain for battery-grade graphite, with mining and processing planned to support U.S. manufacturers.

Westwater Resources filed a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit application for its Coosa Graphite Project in Coosa County, Alabama, on March 2, 2026. This project encompasses the largest natural flake graphite deposit in the contiguous U.S., spanning 41,965 acres.
The U.S. imports approximately 180,000 metric tons of graphite products annually, with 120,000 metric tons sourced from China, which controls 95% of the global supply. Westwater aims for vertical integration by mining at Coosa and processing at the Kellyton facility in Alabama. The NPDES permit is a necessary step in the multi-year process before mining can commence.
