Whitney Pond Dam Removed in Ashburnham to Mitigate Hazards
The Whitney Pond Dam's removal, classified as a significant hazard, aims to enhance public safety and ecological health. This is part of Massachusetts' broader initiative to address aging dams and improve environmental conditions.

On July 14, the state announced the removal of Whitney Pond Dam in Ashburnham, classified as a 'significant hazard' due to its poor condition. The project, which cost $1.4 million and was funded by state resources, follows the removal of the dam's center section a year earlier to restore the Whitman River's natural flow.
The dam, constructed in the 1800s, had not been utilized for hydropower since 1975, with residents voting for its removal in 2018. This action is part of Massachusetts' goal to remove 10% of its 3,000 dams by 2050 for safety and ecological restoration. The removal of Whitney Pond Dam is expected to improve local fish habitats and public safety.
