Wilson Advances Legislation on Battery Energy Storage Systems
Wilson is set to vote on local regulations restricting Tier 2 battery energy storage systems to industrial zones. This law aligns with NYSERDA's model and reflects broader regulatory trends in Niagara County.

The Village of Wilson will vote on a law that limits Tier 2 battery energy storage systems to industrial-zoned areas, specifically in southern parcels. In contrast, Tier 1 systems, capable of storing up to 600 kWh, are permitted throughout the village due to their integration with rooftop solar systems.
This legislation is modeled after NYSERDA guidelines and resembles existing regulations in Lancaster. Following a moratorium on large-scale battery storage permits initiated in October 2024, the village has now drafted new regulations and extended the moratorium to refine its approach.
The Niagara County Planning Board endorsed this legislation, with a vote scheduled for May 21. This move reflects a trend among Niagara County municipalities, including Cambria and Newfane, to establish similar regulations.
