Wisconsin Assembly Passes Nuclear Energy Incentives to Encourage New Power Plants

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTUREFUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER

The Wisconsin Assembly passed legislation on Thursday offering two decades of tax credits for new nuclear plants, supporting a 'nuclear renaissance' amid a data center construction boom. Authored by State Rep.

Shae Sortwell and State Sen. Jesse James, the bill provides annual $10,000 tax credits for the first ten years, decreasing by $1,000 annually thereafter. It prioritizes nuclear energy as part of a low-carbon-emission resource definition and allows the Wisconsin Public Service Commission to approve tariffs to shield residential customers from costs linked to large users like data centers.

The bill passed with an 86-11 vote despite some opposition, including concerns over the high costs of building nuclear facilities. The legislation follows recent bipartisan support for nuclear energy measures, including a $2 million feasibility study and a nuclear power summit board established by Governor Tony Evers.
