Wissington Sugar Factory Marks Century of Operation and Efficiency Improvements
British Sugar's Wissington factory, operational since 1925, is the UK's largest sugar beet processing site. It processes 20,000 tonnes of sugar beet daily, producing around 400,000 tonnes of sugar annually with minimal waste. The factory also operates a bioethanol plant, producing up to 75 million litres yearly. Committed to the local community, Wissington engages in volunteering and charitable activities. With a significant decarbonisation project underway, the factory aims to continue its legacy of innovation and efficiency.

Wissington factory, opened in 1925, is the UK’s largest sugar beet processing site, now slicing around 20,000 tonnes daily. Supplied by approximately 800 local growers, it processes three million tonnes of sugar beet annually, producing 400,000 tonnes of sugar with only 200g of waste per tonne.
The factory operates a circular economy model, creating various co-products for multiple industries. In 2007, it launched the UK’s first bioethanol plant, generating up to 75 million litres yearly. With a focus on community engagement and a significant decarbonisation project, Wissington continues to seek innovations as it celebrates its centenary.
