Wärtsilä Reports Zero New Orders for Battery Storage Amid Uncertain Outlook
Wärtsilä's order book for new battery storage equipment fell to zero in Q1 2026, raising concerns about sector viability. The company anticipates a challenging second half unless immediate orders are secured.

Wärtsilä, a leading battery storage provider, reported no new orders for equipment in the first quarter of 2026, highlighting significant uncertainty in the battery sector due to global political developments and potential US tariffs. The company has established itself in Australia with key projects, including the Eraring battery, which will total over 700MW and 3,180 MWh upon completion in 2027.
While Wärtsilä expects a stronger performance in 2026 compared to 2025, challenges in order intake could lead to losses in energy storage. In contrast, the company is experiencing growth in its fossil fuel power business, securing major contracts for data center supplies, which may offset battery sector declines.
