Wythe County Board Approves Future Data Center in Progress Park Amid Community Concerns

On December 5, the Wythe County Board of Supervisors announced plans for a data center at Progress Park. Community members expressed concerns regarding the implications of an artificial intelligence data center, particularly regarding land use and natural resources.

The county provided data indicating that the proposed Solis Arx center would use less than 2,000 gallons of water per day, totaling 750,000 gallons annually, due to a closed-loop chilled water system. Despite claims that residential and business utility bills would remain unaffected, a study by the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission warned that increased energy demand from data centers could raise costs for all customers. Solis Arx will cover the expenses for expanding the necessary power infrastructure, but potential increases in electric bills for residents remain uncertain.
