xAI Expands Gas Turbine Operations Amid Permit Controversy in Mississippi
xAI has increased its gas turbines in Southaven to 46 without air permits, raising environmental concerns. The situation is under evaluation by state officials amidst legal challenges from the NAACP.
xAI has added 28 temporary-mobile gas turbines at its Southaven facility, bringing the total to 46, all operating without air permits. This increase has prompted a lawsuit from the NAACP, which argues that the turbines should be classified as stationary and require permits under the federal Clean Air Act.
The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) allows these turbines to operate without permits for up to a year due to their mobile classification. Local residents have raised concerns about air emissions and noise pollution, as MDEQ monitors the situation.
Additionally, a permit for 41 permanent gas generators was approved in March, which the Southern Environmental Law Center has appealed. The absence of permits prevents measurement of emissions, posing risks of toxic pollution to nearby communities.
