xAI Leases Colossus 1 Supercomputer to Anthropic Amid Training Challenges
xAI has leased its Colossus 1 data center to Anthropic for $1.25 billion per month, with a potential total exceeding $40 billion. This leasing arrangement highlights the scarcity of GPU resources and the strategic dependencies that arise in the AI sector.

Elon Musk's xAI has rented its Colossus 1 data center in Memphis, equipped with over 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs, to Anthropic for approximately $1.25 billion monthly. The initial lease, signed on May 6, 2026, is set for six months, totaling around $7.5 billion, with potential extensions through May 2029.
The facility's architecture proved unsuitable for training xAI's Grok models due to latency issues with cross-site operations. In contrast, Anthropic will utilize the supercomputer for inference tasks to support its Claude Pro and Claude Max services.
This deal indicates a growing trend in the AI compute market, where companies may collaborate despite direct competition. However, Anthropic's reliance on xAI's hardware poses risks of capacity constraints if lease negotiations become contentious.
