XPANCEO and ITEN Develop Smart Lens with Integrated Solid-State Battery Proof of Concept
XPANCEO and ITEN have created a proof of concept for integrating solid-state batteries into smart contact lenses, addressing energy storage challenges in ocular wearables. This advancement has significant implications for the future of augmented reality and health monitoring technologies.

XPANCEO and ITEN have collaborated to develop a proof of concept for a microbattery integrated into smart contact lenses. This innovation addresses the need for ultra-thin, durable energy storage solutions required for devices worn directly on the eye, overcoming critical challenges related to safety and functionality.
Solid-state batteries are preferred due to their stability, as they cannot leak or swell, making them suitable for contact lenses. ITEN has been mass-producing ceramic microbatteries since May 2025, which are designed to meet the power demands of smart lenses. The partnership marks a milestone in energy storage for smart contact lenses, potentially paving the way for commercial viability in this emerging sector.
