Yara Eyde Launches Green Ammonia Shipping in 2026
The Yara Eyde will operate using green ammonia as fuel on the Oslo-Hamburg route in 2026, cutting CO₂ emissions by 11,000 tons annually. This transition marks a significant advancement in maritime decarbonization, with Equinor also converting the Viking Energy to green ammonia for offshore supply operations.

In 2026, the Yara Eyde will become the first container ship to operate on green ammonia, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions by about 11,000 tons per year. Concurrently, Equinor will convert the Viking Energy to utilize green ammonia for servicing oil platforms in the North Sea.
Green ammonia is produced using 100% renewable energy, offering a zero-carbon alternative compared to traditional fuels. While there are challenges, including the high cost of conversion ($25-50 million per ship) and the need for improved fuel infrastructure, the rapid adoption of this technology could reshape the shipping industry's compliance with IMO climate goals, aiming for a 50% reduction in emissions by 2050.
