Yorkshire Water Advances Major Renewable Gas Project at Blackburn Meadows

Civil engineering work has officially commenced at Yorkshire Water's Blackburn Meadows site in Sheffield, heralding a crucial advancement in one of the region's most significant renewable gas projects. Coordinated by Green Gas Solutions, the five-month civil works program will lay the groundwork for gas-to-grid equipment anticipated to arrive by autumn 2025.

The current phase involves installing essential infrastructure, including foundations, drainage systems, ducting, and roadways, with commissioning expected by year-end and full-scale operations planned for the first half of 2026. Once operational, this facility will inject sufficient biomethane into the local network to provide heat for approximately 4,000 homes each year.

In tandem with a second project at Knostrop in Leeds, these two sites aim to deliver renewable gas to around 10,000 households, collectively generating about 0.125 TWh of green gas annually. This initiative aligns with the UK’s ambitious target of achieving 50 TWh of biomethane production by 2030, a volume projected to surpass the output of the nation’s nuclear fleet, currently at 37.3 TWh. Notably, sewage sludge alone is estimated to contribute 2.6 TWh annually, underscoring the sector’s expanding role in the country's net-zero efforts.

Annabel West, head of Green Gas Solutions at SGN, remarked on the development's significance, emphasizing the collaborative spirit between utilities and the gas sector. "It’s inspiring to see infrastructure being built that will soon deliver measurable carbon savings for thousands of homes,” she stated. West highlighted that projects like this not only facilitate the decarbonization of heat but also establish a solid foundation for a flourishing green gas economy across the UK.

Looking forward, there are promising opportunities for carbon capture at Yorkshire Water’s biomethane sites, which could enable the generation of up to 15,000 tonnes of biogenic CO2 annually. Additionally, innovations such as propane trim technology are being explored to enhance efficiency and reduce production costs, marking a progressive step towards a sustainable energy future.
