Yukon-B.C. Grid Connection Project Estimated to Generate $7.6 Billion Annually Amid Environmental Concerns

STRATEGIC MINERALSPOWER GRIDS & TRANSMISSION

The Yukon-B.C. grid connect project aims to link Yukon to B.C.'s power grid, potentially generating $7.6 billion annually and creating 36,000 jobs. The initiative includes an 800-kilometre high-voltage transmission line and seeks to address Yukon’s increasing power demand.

However, northern B.C. First Nations and conservationists raise concerns about the project's impact on local ecosystems and the possibility of accelerating mining developments, with 19 mining projects identified as beneficiaries.

The project is currently in the pre-feasibility phase, funded by the Yukon Development Corporation and Canada's Critical Mineral Infrastructure Fund. While some local leaders see economic benefits and job creation, they also warn of potential environmental costs, including pollution and ecosystem disruption.
