Yukon Energy Plans for 150 MW Diesel Power Generation
Yukon Energy's diesel Power Centres initiative targets 150 megawatts of power generation in Whitehorse. The shift back to diesel gensets is driven by global demand from tech companies and supply shortages of natural gas turbines.

Yukon Energy is pursuing a total of 150 megawatts from two diesel power plants in Whitehorse—60 megawatts in South Whitehorse and 90 megawatts in North Whitehorse. The increasing demand for diesel generators is influenced by global tech companies' expansion and the unavailability of natural gas turbines.
The preferred configuration would involve medium-speed diesel gensets, each generating 5-20 megawatts. Potential suppliers include American, European, Japanese, and Korean manufacturers, with geopolitical considerations impacting procurement decisions. These gensets are expected to be in use for decades until further renewable energy developments or nuclear reactor exploration around 2040.
