Zambia Initiates €4 Million Mining Skills Development Initiative with Liebherr
Zambia's new initiative, valued at €4 million, introduces a dual vocational education model aimed at enhancing skills in the expanding mining sector. The project, a collaboration between Fountain Gate Crafts and Trades School and Liebherr, is crucial for addressing the skills gap as Zambia targets increased copper production and middle-income status by 2030.

A dual vocational education and training (Dual VET) model will be implemented in Zambia over the next three years, supported by a €4 million partnership between Fountain Gate Crafts and Trades School and Liebherr Zambia Limited. This initiative aims to address the skills gap in the mining sector, crucial for Zambia's goal of 3 million metric tonnes of copper production by 2031.
The program includes a four-year apprenticeship with a 50/50 split of classroom and on-site training, and emphasizes high-demand technical skills such as advanced heavy-duty mechanics. It also seeks to promote inclusivity and the use of modern training tools. With a youth unemployment rate above 17%, the initiative is expected to significantly contribute to workforce development and economic growth in Zambia.
