Zanzibar Government Addresses Contractor Performance Issues in Electricity Projects
Zanzibar's Second Vice President has expressed dissatisfaction with contractor ZTT's performance on electricity projects, prompting a review of project timelines and partnerships. The government aims to resolve delays affecting electricity distribution in the region to meet growing demand and support economic development.

The Zanzibar government is taking serious measures due to contractor ZTT's unsatisfactory pace on electricity distribution line projects, which threaten to delay essential power supply improvements. Vice President Hemed Suleiman Abdulla has instructed the Ministry of Water, Energy and Minerals to collaborate with the World Bank to remedy these delays.
The Welezo substation project, part of a Sh59 billion initiative, is currently at 75% completion but may face commissioning challenges due to incomplete distribution lines. Legal action against ZTT is being considered for failing to meet deadlines, with expectations to resolve electricity challenges by 2030 through ongoing investments. The rehabilitation of 30 generators at Mtoni, with a capacity of 20 megawatts, reflects efforts to mitigate electricity shortages.
