Zesa Holdings Reports Weekly Loss of Up to Eight Transformers Due to Vandalism
Zesa Holdings Limited is losing five to eight transformers weekly due to escalating vandalism, costing the utility over US$4 million this year. This trend contributes to rolling blackouts affecting both residential and industrial consumers, prompting a downward revision of GDP growth projections for 2022.

Zesa Holdings Limited reports a loss of five to eight transformers each week due to severe vandalism, which has resulted in financial losses of US$4.17 million in 2022 and approximately US$13 million since 2020. The primary targets for vandalism include transformers and copper conductors, which are trafficked to markets in South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, China, and Europe.
Strategies to combat this issue involve transformer tracking, joint law enforcement operations, and lobbying for stricter legal measures. The ongoing vandalism threatens power supply stability and undermines Zimbabwe's Vision 2030 economic goals. Continued vandalism could further disrupt industrial operations and lead to more significant economic repercussions.
