Zimbabwe Positioned to Become Major Lithium Producer Amid Chinese Investment Surge
Chinese investments exceeding US$1 billion could elevate Zimbabwe to the world's fifth-largest lithium producer by 2025. The country aims to increase lithium carbonate equivalent production from 13,000 tonnes in 2022 to 192,000 tonnes by 2027, significantly impacting global supply chains.

Chinese companies, including Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt and Sinomine Resource Group, have invested over US$1 billion in Zimbabwe's lithium sector, enhancing production capacity from 13,000 tonnes per year in 2022 to an estimated 192,000 tonnes by 2027. This investment surge is expected to position Zimbabwe as the fifth largest lithium producer globally by 2025, outperforming Canada and Brazil.
Current lithium production in Zimbabwe is primarily from Bikita Minerals, which has expanded capacity from 6,000 tonnes LCE per year in 2020 to over 90,000 tonnes LCE. However, market demand and pricing will ultimately determine the full utilization of this capacity in the coming years.
