Zimbabwe's Kariba South Hydropower Station to Increase Output to 750 MW in 2023
Power generation at Kariba South Hydropower Station is projected to rise to 750 MW due to recovering Lake Kariba water levels. Current output stands at 250 MW. The commissioning of Hwange Thermal Power Station Units 7 and 8 added 600 MW.
Zimbabwe's national demand is about 2,200 MW. Future projects include the 1,200 MW Batoka Gorge Hydro-Electric Scheme and a 600 MW Kariba Floating Solar Power Plant, expected to add 1,800 MW. Improved water levels and inflows from the Zambezi basin enhance regional energy security.
The Batoka project, a joint venture with Zambia, aims for 2,400 MW capacity and is expected to stimulate economic activity. Feasibility studies for the floating solar plant are underway to diversify energy sources.
