Eleven airstrips in Jammu and Kashmir, including Gurez, Kishtwar, and Udhampur, are non-operational under the UDAN regional connectivity scheme, lacking approved commercial flight routes. Despite multiple bidding rounds, no routes have been allocated.
The Kishtwar airstrip, crucial for the Chenab Valley, is still in early development, with a feasibility study ongoing. AAI assessed Udhampur Air Force Station for civil flights, finding it feasible pending clearances. The airstrips were intended to improve access to remote areas, boost tourism, and enhance logistics but have seen slow progress in integration into UDAN.
